Kathmandu is nestled in a small valley surrounded by hills, with peaks not more than 2900m. Interestingly, most of the hills have forests that are community run, and about 170 kms of walkable trails running through them. Depending on the time of the year, and where on the rim you are, one can have majestic views of the Himalaya beyond, and if you are lucky, some of the highest peaks in the world.A day hike or a run here can be as short as half a day, a full day, or even multi-day if you want to complete the whole circuit. Depending on which hike you choose, it can be more nature based, or a combination of local lifestyle and nature.While we can do the entire rim, these are some options we can recommend.<h1>Southern Ridge Hike</h1>12 - 17kms of the ridgeline with the best line of sight to the mountains, it starts with a cable car ride up to Chandragiri, at 2450m and walks the ridge, mostly downhill (mostly being the key word), down to the Pharping side at around 1400m.<h1>South Eastern Ridge Hike</h1>A great sample of how trekking works in Nepal, this starts with a uphill hike to the ridgeline and then an undulating ridgeline hike, before descending unto the Bhatapur side of the valley. Chances of doing a 1.2 km zipline to reduce some of the downhill to a zip.<h1>Northern Ridge Hike</h1>The Shivapuri Peak is the second highest point in the valley, and as its nestled inside a National Park, has lush forest ridgeline that extends for miles. There is a possibility to make this hike shorter or longer, harder or easier based on where one starts and ends.<h1>Eastern Ridge Hike</h1>An easy four hour hike from the famous hill station of Nagarkot, goes all the way down towards Dhulikhel, the gateway from Kathmandu towards Tibet.
